Sahana

Sahana Disaster Management Software Project

The Sahana Free and Open Source Disaster Management System was conceived during the 2004 December Asian Tsunami. It was developed to help manage the scale of the disaster and was deployed by the government’s Center of National Operations (CNO) which included the Consortium of Humanitarian Agencies (CHA).

Based on the success of this initial application and the dire need for good disaster management solutions particularly to handle large scale disasters, SIDA funded a second phase through LSF to generalize the application for global use and to help in any large scale disaster. Four members of the Sahana development team were recipients of the Free Software Foundation award.

As part of a series of events held in March, Sahana has been sucessfully incubated by LSF and an interim Sahana board has been set up to overlook affairs and form a new Sahana Foundation as a United States 501-C3 non-profit organization.
